In our first post, we introduced you to our community and what you can expect during your time here. Now, we’re diving into some essential tips that will help you navigate your new adventure in Monterrey with confidence and excitement.
Moving to a new country is a monumental experience, filled with both thrilling highs and challenging lows. It’s normal to feel a bit overwhelmed at times, but remember, every step you take is part of your unique journey. Our goal is to provide you with practical advice to make settling into life in Monterrey not only manageable but enjoyable.
Because of this, we have gathered some of the best tips we consider basic for you to have a smoother and easier time blending in your new city!
We have asked both our staff and international students friends of ours that already came to exchange here for their top tips to help you settle in and make the most of your experience in Monterrey:
Learn Some Spanish:
This is the most basic one, knowing a few key Spanish phrases can work wonders! While many people here speak English, embracing the local language will significantly enrich your experience. Start with the basics: greetings, common phrases, and how to ask for help. Remember, it’s not just about communicating; it’s about connecting. Practicing your Spanish can lead to some hilarious misunderstandings, trust us, it’s all part of the fun! Plus, locals will appreciate your efforts, and you might even find a new language buddy along the way.
Be Open to New Experiences:
One of the coolest things about studying abroad is stepping outside your comfort zone. Monterrey is bursting with new flavors, customs, and experiences just waiting for you. Be willing to try new foods (yes, we’re talking about that mysterious street taco), attend local events, and engage with the culture. Whether it’s joining in on a traditional dance or sampling unique local dishes, you’ll find that the more open you are, the richer your experience will be.
Stay Connected:
You’re not alone in this adventure! Reach out to fellow international students and locals. Join student groups, clubs, or online communities where you can connect and share experiences. Remember, many students are in the same boat, and making new friends can help ease any feelings of homesickness. Plus, who knows? You might discover lifelong friendships and form bonds that transcend borders.
If you feel a bit shy or don’t know where to start just reach out to us! We have so many different ways to help you connect to other international and local students, such as Whatsapp groups, our instagram community and specific groups tailored to culture, travel, culture, music, events, etc. so you will have no excuse to miss out.
Explore Your New Home:
Monterrey has so much to offer, and you’ll want to take advantage of it! Spend weekends exploring local parks, museums, and neighborhoods. Don’t miss out on iconic sites like Cerro de la Silla, where you can hike and take in breathtaking views of the city. Also, check out Macroplaza, a lively area with shops and eateries, or explore the vibrant nightlife in neighborhoods like Barrio Antiguo. The more you explore, the more you’ll feel at home, and you’ll create amazing memories along the way.
Remember to join our community to have our staff take you to these events and activities!
Seek Support When Needed:
Adjusting to a new environment can be tough, and it’s perfectly okay to feel a little overwhelmed. If you have questions about your classes, cultural differences, or just need someone to chat with, don’t hesitate to reach out for support. Our team at Goodlife Monterrey is here for you, and so are your fellow students. Remember, you’re not in this alone! Connecting with others can provide a comforting sense of community during your transition.
Be Patient with Yourself:
Remember, it’s totally normal to feel out of place at first. Give yourself time to adjust and be kind to yourself during this transition. Ordering your first meal in Spanish or making a new friend is already making progress. Every step counts! Personal growth takes time, and every experience is a chance to learn and evolve.
Stay Safe:
Familiarize yourself with local safety tips. It’s smart to keep your belongings secure and be aware of your surroundings. Trust your instincts, and if something doesn’t feel right, don’t hesitate to remove yourself from the situation. Staying safe will give you peace of mind and let you focus on enjoying your time here.
We always say that Mexico is, in general, a safe place to visit. Just have common sense and don’t put yourself in dangerous situations. And if you ever have doubts about a certain area whether it is to rent, get an airbnb, go to eat out or hike, just ask us. That’s why we are here, we are locals that have lived here and know this city, so take advantage of our experience!
Get Involved:
Engaging with the local community can be incredibly rewarding. Look for volunteering opportunities, local events, or clubs that match your interests. Getting involved not only helps you meet new people but also gives you a chance to immerse yourself in the local culture. Whether it’s participating in a charity event or joining a university sports league, you’ll find that being active in the community enhances your experience and opens doors to new friendships.
We hope these tips help you feel more at home in Monterrey and make your time here enjoyable and fulfilling. The journey of studying abroad is one of the most exciting adventures you’ll ever embark on, and we’re here to support you every step of the way.
